Dear Culture It’s Me; Margaret

Written by AlvinBlah on December 10th, 2007 | Trackback URI |

Am I the only one that feels that American culture is gone?

Every day I wonder where the amazing talent and frustration of today’s artists are. In generations past the artist movement has been clutch in galvanizing Americans to change their minds about sensitive issues.

Be it hippies, Motown, environmentalists, beatnicks, original hipsters, or even the reds of the 50s. Our Art has played a very heavy and serious roll in American culture.

Where are they now?

the 90s had grunge. Are they satisfied with their slacker coffee and middle finger to Ticketmaster? Where’s the leadership?…oh yeah, they shot themselves and said they were never in it for the money.

well guess what..History is looking unkindly on you now.

Many Americans are frustrated with the events of today and they don’t know what to do. We are a culture of individuals but we are a culture that is also receptive to leaders, and all the traditional counter culture leaders sold the fuck out and I can name names.

Eddie Vedder
Kurt Cobain
Lars Ulric
Hunter S. Thompson
Darren Aronofsky
That Asshole from Scrubs that did “Garden State”
Billy Corgan
George Cloony

and any other prick that used national dissent to fuel their own pocket book. It’s not enough to insist you care but never follow through, it’s not enough to kill yourself because life is hard.

Guess fucking what. It will always be hard.

What bugs the fucking piss out of me is that America is the culture and the nation of entertainers. We made a fundamental identity out of mass art entertainment. The roots of that identity germinated in protest, stoicism, sophisticated thinking, idealism, and a rock hard determination that they knew better than the status quo.

Where the hell did you go?

As far as I can tell you all sold the fuck out. You went off to make movies and music that provided your second Leer jet and threw America under the rug. And if your little brains couldn’t handle the selling out, you expelled them with a bullet.

cowards. Every last one.

America needs counter-revolutionaries. The arts in America are feverently protected by a small number for a reason. It’s the only breeding ground for a conscience in our society. It is the only locale for the first and best of our nation to say the status quo has gone astray.

However. We’ve lost that path. The value of money and the willingness to sacrifice art for the product has left us in a dire straight.

America has no art, no mainstream culture that is encouraging Americans to do anything other than watch the next episode of 30 Rock. Miss Fey wishes she could get everyone to vote for Obama because Liz Lemon says so. Why not stage a protest and refuse to work instead?

You’re still doing American Express ads I see. Fucking sellout bitch.

Our culture, our sense of democratic balance, needs a counter-punch from people in the limelight. If Hollywood actors are against the war, refuse to act. Stage protests, don’t just espouse rich asshole opinions.

In the 60s and 70s cultural performers and the public were in sync. It created one of the greatest revolutions our nation has seen since. today our rights, our economic value, our way of life has been corrupted more insidiously and more throughly than ever before. yet no one speak up or draws a line in the sand.

If we are to survive as a nation it’s not about banking on a politician, its about a fundamental change in the vibrancy of our culture. And we need those that are already in position to lead the way for everyone else that is waiting for a break.

To all the musicians, authors, filmmakers, actors, and artists in America that earn publicity; YOU ARE NOT DOING ENOUGH.

Stop worrying about your comfortable living arrangements and start remembering that art is for expression and expression demands honesty and a reflections of reality.

Because if you’re not part of the solution you’re in bed with the traitors that are destroying this country and if you’re not in the street protesting and angry about what you think is right, you’re complacent with the status quo.

So what side are you on? Money’s or America’s?
