Chris Lee And The Hypocrisy of ‘Pro-Family’ Republicans

Chris Lee And The Hypocrisy of 'Pro-Family' Republicans

Few people are going to miss Representative Chris Lee. Lechery or no lechery, he was a lousy and insignificant politician, given to abusing earmarks and franking privileges. The only reason anyone cares about Leeā€™s resignation is because of the absurd circumstances of the scandal leading up to it.

Truthfully, even in terms of scandal, itā€™s more stupid than titillating. Lee, despite being married, sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman on Craigslist using his real name. No physical sexual misconduct took place, no one was injured, and the American people as a whole wouldnā€™t have been affected one way or the other if the scandal never broke out.

However, Chris Lee has generated just as much news from the controversy and his subsequent resignation as other licentious politicians. In comparison to other events going on in the world, like the Egyptian situation, the Chris Lee situation is getting more coverage than it most likely deserves. Yet, with further analysis, this situation speaks volumes about not only the nature of political sex scandals, but also of the moral expectations of the Republican political machine.

Why Is America Infatuated With Charlie Sheen’s Downfall?

Americas Infatuation With Charlie Sheen

I applied to be Charlie Sheenā€™s intern. Unfortunately, 74,048 others couldn’t resist his pitch, either:

Why Facebook Is The Future Of The Internet & Personal Relationships

Being Mark Zuckerberg on Saturday Night Live

Imagine you woke up as Mark Zuckerberg. The Middle East is revolting daily thanks, in part, to a website you cobbled together in your dorm room. Drunk. Time Magazine named you Person of the Year two months ago. Goldman Sachs cut your company a half billion dollar check last month. And the movie about you may well win the Oscar for best picture later this month. You are 26 years old and worth $15 billion.

In spite of the spoils, you live a more or less monastic life. You zip up the hoodie, walk out of the modest home you rent month to month, and cruise to work in the Accura TSX, your lone indulgence. Itā€™s a one minute drive. The office is fratty. Everyone is a ā€œdudeā€. Many wear flip-flops. And there are unlimited Lucky Charms. You donā€™t have your own office so you plop down wherever and code on and off for the next 16 hours. When people donā€™t interrupt you.

Three Charities That Don’t Deserve Your Money

Three Charities That Don't Deserve Your Money

This is the concluding post of the PBH series Choose Another Charity, comprised of 3 articles on the Salvation Army, MADD, and ChildFund.

Salvation Army [Editor’s note: For a vigorous debate on the Salvation Army, see the comment section of the original article]

Everyone knows the Salvation Army. Whether itā€™s the secondhand goods at their thrift stores or their collection kettles outside department stores, the Salvation Army is ubiquitous to the holiday season.

However, the Salvation Armyā€™s virulent opposition to gay rights both in public and through persistent legislative lobbying raises the question how donations intended for the needy are being spent. Many people forget that the Salvation Army is in fact an Evangelical church, and as such, it tends to have a hard-right social agenda.
