Atheists v. Christians: a Match Neither Side Can Win

Bill Maher Treebowing

Regardless, many have found the whole New Testament face painting and his well-vocalized Christian ideals as nothing more than annoying and over the top proselytism. Especially Bill Maher, one of atheism’s more outspoken advocates.

Commenting on the Broncos’ Christmas Eve 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills with 140 characters of snark, the rather brusque Maher invoked Satan, Hitler, and Jesus in a tweet to denigrate Tebow’s entirely OK belief that God actually helps him win football games.

As to be expected, Tebow turned the other cheek and chose not to acknowledge Maher’s callous remarks. His fans, however, did not. Outraged, many religious conservatives called for a boycott of HBO, home of Maher’s “Real Time” TV show. And not one to leave any insignificant stone unturned, FOX’ “Follow the Money” host Eric Bolling (also known for recently dubbing the Muppets as doctrinaire communists) took the time to protect both Tebow and Christianity by condemning the godless and blaspheming Maher “straight to hell.”

If only Maher believed in that.

Unsurprisingly, the recoiling of the religious right only stoked the already blazing fire that is Maher’s ego, as he has continued to mock Tebow and his fans by likening them to North Koreans mourning the death of their dear leader Kim Jong-Il.

And so, the tedious back and forth punting between atheist Maher and his equally ignited Christian foes continues. In the meantime, another game awaits: on Sunday Tebow and his fellow Broncos play the Steelers in the playoffs. In that game, they may win or lose. But in the arena of faith (even if it is a faith in nothing), no one wins and it is only tolerance that may be lost. It is high time we realized this.
