Great things, Thomas? “Bloody respect”? Crime dropped due to a massive real estate upturn, causing the city to be so expensive that even run-of-the-mill criminals got pushed out from the city. This was not from any talent Giuliani had. There’s still a ton of underreported crime in Washington Heights, Inwood, most of the Bronx, etc. Most New Yorkers hated Giuliani. Try asking one.

Remember that Giuliani was only in office after 9/11 until January (4 months, most of which was figuring out what happened, and cleaning up the site). The successful rebuilding of NYC after that can be attributed to Michael Bloomberg.

Thomas: please give credit where credit is due. The guys that cleaned up the subways were George L. Kelling & David Gunn. William J. Bratton was hired to run the transit police and further implemented George Kelling’s ideas. Guiliani was elected afterwards and adopted their techniques city-wide. Giuliani gets credit for expanding the idea and staying out of the way of what was working, but should get no credit for the original ideas and their results.

If Rudy Giuliani had won the nomination, I was going to start a campaign for the late Butch Felker. Both were mayors, Giuliani of New York, and Felker of Topeka, Kansas. Felker, however, kept Topeka safe from terrorism. Not once in Felker’s two and a half terms as mayor was Topeka attacked. Plus, being dead, he’d be far less embarrassing than Giuliani.

I can’t help but point out that this is frightfully unfair. Giuliani is a splendid chap has done awfully well to cut crime out of the city of New York. No longer do hoodlums, degenerates and filth roam the streets in such numbers as they once did.
The fellow did terribly well coping with 9/11 and has done great thinks for New York city and deserves some bloody respect for it.
