Why We Need To Say No To Keystone

The oil that Canada has deep within its chunk of earth’s crust is hardly the light, clean oil that we can see and draw from on the daily in Saudi Arabia. It’s heavy, tar sand crude, which is some of the most expensive, difficult, and environmentally hazardous to refine. Beyond that, it’s not even coming to the United States, it’s going through it, all the while releasing harmful greenhouses gases and, given the incredibly corrosive chemical additive and sand cocktail, running the risk of seeping through these transcontinental pipes. In other words, big oil stands to gain. We don’t.

Four College Kids Try Living On $1 A Day

Say what you will about these college kids–that their 56-day adventure in poverty is an unescapable daily nightmare for most, that this documentary is yet another example of the West exploiting the poor for their own gain, what have you. Despite its obvious issues, the series (which can be found here) provides valuable insights into how 1.1 billion people live from day to day through a familiar–and therefore potentially more powerful–voice box. It’s worth a watch.

McDonald’s To Employees: Go On Food Stamps!

In his race to the bottom, it seems Ronald McDonald is the winner. McDonald’s has kept its prices low forever, but as of it late it’s becoming more and more obvious that it’s at the expense of their employees’ welfare…and our tax dollars. On fast food workers alone, the US federal government spends around $7 billion in benefits like Medicaid and food stamps. Because hey, it’s one thing to bleed your employees; it’s another to charge $1.50 for a burger. Watch here, get outraged, and do something about it.
