From conversations I've had with people over it (more than a few) it is pretty common, but usually kids get it. Like elementary school age. Usually cause kids are dirty and don't care. When adults get them, one usually treats it quickly and is done with the whole thing, not let it linger into...well, what happened with you... They're nasty for sure.
