For an educated European, it is like absurd entertainment to read these comments on what I assume to be a left leaning american political site.
If any of the teabaggers had any idea what would have been possible in the states if you implemented lets say an Norwegian or Danish or Dutch, German, French or almost any Norhtern European system in the states.
First, get rid of personhood for Corporations, Outlaw Political contributions , and publickly fund your election campains thru grants to the political Parties.
Then pass a law that gives royalties to the public on all raw material extractin form public grounds, IE your whole continental shelf, the Gulf of Mexico, and of cource Alaska. The revenue for this alone will eliminate the defecit in some years. As it is now the oil companies get the offshore oil allmost free, at least compared to what they have to pay other places in the world. Look at Norway…
Gradually reduce your humongus armed forces by at least 50%, but of cource it will have to be done slowly so all that manpower can transition into sivilian jobs.
The money saved just on the last point will fund both universal healthcare, and an improved social security and free education thru University for all.

Hitler was NOT a socialist. he was a Facist. FDR threatened to pack the Supreme Court bc that court recognized that the gov power nec to take money from private citizens and private property was forbidden by the Const.
